Books That Are Banned In India

Nehru-A Political Biography: This book written by Michael Edwards examine various facets of Nehru’s persona: Nehru-the statesman, Nehru-the administrator, Nehru’s complex relationship with Gandhi. It traces Nehru’s early days and his motivations. It contrasts Nehru-the freedom fighter, agitator with Nehru-the ruler, administrator of independent India. It delves into the way Nehru was affected by partition. Some parts of the book are psychological in nature. Edwards describes Nehru as an ‘inept administrator’- an opinion lot of people had objection to. The government of India was prompt to ban the book on its publication in 1975 citing factual errors.

Other Notable Books That Earned the Wrath of Public: There’re a number of other books which share the luck of the above books. Few other controversial books that earned ban for themselves include: The Heart of India by Alexander Campbell, The Moor’s Last Sigh by Salman Rushdie, The True Furquan by Al Saffee, Al Mahdee. Then, there’re the bans by the state governments. Joseph Lelyveld’s book Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle With India was banned by the government of India for it suggested an extra cosy relationship between the Mahatma and Hermann Kallenbach.
