Books That Are Banned In India

The Satanic Verses: The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie was published in the United Kingdom in 1988 to great critical acclaim. It was in the final list of the Booker award in 1988. The book was inspired by Prophet Mohammad’s life. Muslims complained of blasphemy and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of Iran issued a Fatwa against Rushdie in 1989 putting a price on his head.The bookstores selling the book were attacked, Rushdie had to go underground. The issue became a landmark event in the contemporary literary history of the free world. India was the first country of to ban the book.

An Area of Darkness: This book is the first one in the series of three books on India written by V.S. Naipaul after his travels through India. This book allegedly gives a pessimistic account of Indian society.  The public was particularly not happy with the discouraging picture that Naipaul had painted of India’s socio-economic progress as his opinions tended to suggest India as failed state. In the book, Naipaul contrasts the India he grew up imagining in Trinidad and the India he was now confronted with.  This travelogue was published in 1964 and was banned in India.
