When India lost the World Cup in 1996, Azharuddin managed to win the heart of Sangeeta Bijalani, to his sheer luck and they got married post World Cup. On the other hand, Sangeeta had won the Miss India Title in the year 1980.She was an acclaimed model and her career as an actress was enroute.

Before marriage there were link-ups between her and noted actor Salman Khan.Azharuddin had just broke up with his first wife Naureen. He has two sons from his first wife, namely Asad and Ayaz, and the latter passed away in a road accident in September 2011.
