BSNL hires IMRB to study its declining landline connections
Bangalore: Telecom operator BSNL has hired market research firm IMRB (Indian Market Research Bureau) to study the reasons for falling landline connections. The revenues and profits of state run BSNL has been declining drastically for a while now. The telecom operator has already conducted an internal study which found that the main reasons for its falling landline connections are surrender of excess telephones, increased use of mobiles, unsatisfactory service, competition and economic factors. A BSNL official said that steps are being taken and will be taken as per the suggestions by IMRB. The current steps being undertaken are, formation of a marketing task force to provide doorstep services to customers and start of broadband, IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services on landline connections, among others. Revenue from landline services have dipped by 20.65 percent to 11,505 crore in 2008-09, compared to 14,499 crore in 2007-08. As of May 2009, BSNL landline connections stood at 2.89 crore. The official said that the number of landline connections surrendered during the previous three years stood at around 6 million. This year, about 342,000 connections were surrendered till May 31. The net profit of BSNL dipped to 104 crore in 2008-09 fiscal due to the fall in revenue and rise in wages. The income stood at 34,937 crore in 2008-09.
