Ashutosh Bhagwat, member of California's Governor board

Bangalore: Indian American Ashutosh Bhagwat who resides in Moraga, California, has been appointed as the Board member for California Independent system Operator. Ashutosh Bhagwat was appointed by Jerry Brown, California Governor on May 2, 2011 to a term that expires on December 31, 2013. Ashutosh Bhagwat is a graduate of Yale College. He graduated 'summa cum laude' with Honors in History in 1986. He was awarded a 'Juris Doctor' with Honors degree in 1990 from the University of Chicago Law School. Currently he is a Professor of law at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Ashutosh Bhagwat joined the Hastings faculty in 1994, followed by two years of practice as a regulatory and appellate lawyer in Washington, D.C. As a professor, Ashutosh played the role of Articles Editor at the University of Chicago Law Review. Earlier, Ashutosh served as a law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Anthony Kennedy (1991-1992) and Judge Richard Posner of the U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit (1990-1991). Later in 1994, Ashutosh taught courses in antitrust, regulated industries, administrative and constitutional law. He was an Associate at the law firm of Sidley and Austin from 1992-1994. Ashutosh Bhagwat has published various books and articles on a wide variety of subjects, ranging from the structure of constitutional rights, to free speech law, to the California electricity crisis. He was also awarded and honoured for Member, American Law Institute and 2003 Rutter Award for Teaching Excellence. Ashutosh Bhagwat has a family consisting of his wife Shannon Gaffney, his daughter, and Uma and son, Declan. Ashutosh Bhagwat is currently awaiting Senate confirmation.
