Apple iPhone gains on Nokia Smartphone

Bangalore: Apple's iPhone is slowly coming up to Nokia's mark in Smartphone, globally according to the first-quarter 2011 formula reported by Industrial Design Centre (IDC). iPhone has bagged the second spot after Nokia. BlackBerry dropped to the third after being the second last year. Nokia sold 24.2 million Smartphones in the first quarter. Apple shipped 18.7 million iPhones in the first quarter. This got Apple closer to Nokia with less than 6 million units separating the two companies. BlackBerry remained in third place which sold overall 99.6 million Smartphones out of 372 million mobile phones. The majority shipments are older and lower-cost devices. Samsung finished fourth in Smartphones selling 10.8 million Smartphones which were shipped. HTC finished at fifth with 8.9 million Smartphones which were shipped. Among all the Smartphones Companies, Samsung saw a growth in the first quarter. They had a 350 percent increase year-over-year. Samsung has a multiple-OS strategy and sells mostly Android Smartphones including Galaxy S phones as well as Window Phone 7 and Wave devices. HTC also recorded a 230 percent growth from the first quarter of 2010. It offers the Eyo Shift 4G on WiMax on Sprint's network and the LTE-ready Thunderbolt on Verizon. The market for Smartphones grew by 80 percent in Q1 over the first quarter of 2010. This was also because of the availability of additional Android devices as well as a range of models in all price ranges.
