Apple may open support center in B'lore

BANGALORE: Apple Computer is planning to set up a technical support center in Karnataka on the lines of the one, which Dell has in India. The Director of Software Technology Parks of India, Bangalore, B V Naidu gave no details on investment and hiring plans noting that it's for the company to make an announcement in this regard. Giving this as an example, of "continued interest and confidence of this industry and Bangalore,” he said, “This year, Bangalore attracted large multinational companies (MNCs) such as Deutsche Bank, Bearing Point, Target, Caterpillar, SanDisk, ABB, JPMorgan and Apple Computers.” An American bank and the U.S.-based retail store are also entering the country through the State. Over 400 companies had taken expansion approvals in Bangalore, Naidu added. The IT and BT Secretary Shankaralinge Gowda said, “Karnataka was the preferred destination for IT and ITES companies. Besides Bangalore, Mysore and Mangalore are attracting investors.” Cisco had announced an investment of $800 million in a campus in Bangalore, while IBM and Intel also evinced interest in expansion in the city this financial year, he added. In 2004-05, Karnataka contributed $6272.72 million to the country's total IT exports of $17727.27 million (35 percent). IT exports by the State in 2005-06 are poised to cross $8409.09 million Karnataka's share in the national exports is projected to grow to 37 percent by March 2006.
