Bangalore: A study funded by Vision Mobile states that Android is the least open Platform whereas Eclipse is the most open one. The chosen test subjects for the study were Android, MeeGo, Linux, Qt, WebKit, Mozilla, Eclipse, and Symbian. The study found out that Android scored openness ratings of 23 percent whereas Eclipse tops the chart by scoring 84 percent followed by Linux at 71 per cent. Webkit and Google's Chrome browser were almost closer at 68 and 65 per cent respectively. The four factors that are taken into consideration for surveying the study were, access, which supports availability of latest source code, developer support mechanisms, public roadmap, and transparency of decision-making. Development states the ability of developers to influence the content and direction of the project. Derivatives decides the ability for developers to create and distribute derivatives of the source code in the form of spin-off projects, handsets or applications. The fourth one is a community structure that did not discriminate between developers. Eclipse was appreciated by Vision Mobile for being the most open platform in terms of access, development, and governance. Whereas the study claims that Android's success was linked with Google's financial strength which made it a strong competitor to Apple's iOS-based devices.
