9 Tech Companies Who Paid Biggest Fines In History
#5 Microsoft
Fined - $731 Million
The European Union (EU) fined Microsoft $731 million in early 2013 after the company broke a legally binding agreement it made back in 2009 to ensure customers would have a chance to choose whatever web browser their heart desired as soon as they booted up a Windows PC-but Microsoft instead set the default to Internet Explorer. That's what happened! Microsoft was fined for just having Internet Explorer set as the default on European Windows computers. Quite evidently the Windows 8 maker did not fully grasp the repercussions of their actions before they did the grossly despicable act of setting a default browser for which they paid a handsome fine of $731 Million.
#4 Microsoft
Fined - $1.26 Billion
The trigger happy EU hit Microsoft with a cool $1.26 billion fine for failing to comply with an antitrust ruling from 2004. The case was first opened in 1998 by Sun Microsystems when they alleged Microsoft refused to give out information that its servers needed to work with Windows. It took almost three years for Microsoft to finally comply with the EU's orders, but it charged "unreasonably high charges" for its information until then.
