8 Unsung Female Explorers



Amy Johnson:

This brave aviator was born to set records; she was the first woman to fly solo from Britain to Australia in 1930 and she also has a list of long-distance flying records which also covers the 21 hour flight in 1931  from London to Moscow. Her life was filled with adventures, she got married to a Scottish pilot Jim Mollison who proposed her after knowing only for 8 hours and that too when they were flying together. Amy died during World War II when her flight entered bad weather while transporting RAF aircraft for Air Transport Auxiliary.

Harriet Chalmers Adams:

Harriet was one of the leading women explorers of her time. She was the first president of the Society of Woman Geographers in 1925. She was a travel lover and had covered all of the Latin American countries. Even though she was not blessed with a proper schooling, she was an avid reader and writer. Nation Geographic magazine had published lot of her articles and in 1916 she was also a war correspondent for Harper's magazine.
