William Sewell
William Sewell was the CEO of Pan Am, the U.S. flagship carrier. In 1980, the company bought a National Airlines. Sewell felt the company required a big domestic airline to feed its international routes. The National was purchased for $400 million. This added to the debt the company had incurred in buying its fleet of Boeing 747s for increasing its international fleet capacity. In 1981, Sewell was asked to leave. However, damage had been done and the company went bankrupt a decade later.
