70 percent Indians feel media covered recession well
Bangalore: With 70 percent votes, India is ranked third among countries which feel that the media did a good job of covering issues affecting the global economy. Positive attitude towards media was found to be highest in Pakistan, Indonesia, Philippines, Venezuela and India in the recent 52-nation online survey. The survey conducted by Nielson Company reveals that, most Indians agree that the media is helping them to understand, what the governments are doing to solve the current economic problems, better. Vatsala Pant, Associate Director, Consumer Research of Nielsen Company, India said, "In the recent Nielsen Global Consumer Confidence study India was ranked third on confidence levels. The comparatively high level of confidence that Indians have in their economy might be a reason why Indians have shown more mercy towards media coverage during the downturn than the rest of the world. Also the fact that India didn't face a full blown downturn helped the media to save itself from consumers' ire." While 57 percent Indian respondents feel that the current news coverage of the economic downturn is just about right for them, 23 percent think it's not enough for them and 20 percent think that there is too much coverage. Over 25,000 consumers polled globally feel that media performance has improved over time. However, the general consensus among consumers across much of the world is that the media did a poor job informing the public about issues leading up to the financial crisis. The two regions where consumers were most dissatisfied were Europe and North America. On the other hand consumers of Asia Pacific region were less critical of the media.
