The ESN, or Electronic Serial Number, is a permanent identification number used to recognize mobile devices accessing particular telecommunications networks.
The ESN is assigned and embedded into a wireless communications device by the device's manufacturer The embedded ESN is generally located under or below the battery of a mobile device, or on the back of the device itself. Once embedded, the ESN is not easily alterable, which is why it can be used to electronically check the mobile device against fraudulent use or ownership.
