3.The Islet City of Nan Madol
page3
Nan Madol city on the island of Pohnpei is one of the greatest archeological wonders of the world. It is the only ancient city built on a coral reef and is an engineering phenomenon. Nan Madol is comprised of 92 artificial isles interconnected by canals. These islet structural blocks were built with basalt rocks and naturally breakable volcanic rocks. They were stacked horizontally to form walls measuring 50 feet high and 17 feet thick. The average weight of each stone is 5 tons, with some weighing more than 25 tons. The stones and columns are so heavy that conventional and mainstream scholars are yet to understand how it was built, who built them, and the origin of the building blocks.
