630 Cases Registered for Misleading Drugs Ads


New Delhi: A total of 630 cases were registered for investigations and 69 prosecutions were launched for misleading advertisements related to medicines between 2010-12, a health ministry official said.

The misleading advertisements relating to drugs are dealt under the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954, by state governments.

The official said information given by states suggested that 630 cases were registered for investigations and 69 prosecutions were launched in the year 2010-11 and 2011-12 under the act.

Similarly, 57 food items have been identified whose advertisements in print and electronic media were found to be misleading by the Food Safety and Standards and Authority of India, an official said.

The statutory authority monitors labels on various food items and claims made in advertisement of food items.
