6 Technologies Designed To Harm You
#2 Hackable Medical Devices
This threat looks like something straight out of a science fiction. An attacker with a powerful antenna could remotely hack into your medical devices like an insulin pump and could deliver a lethal shot, which can potentially kill the victim.
The threat was discovered by security researcher Jay Radcliffe, who is a diabetic. He uses an insulin pump, which he discovered was easy to hack using just a powerful antenna. A hacker can control the pump and deliver a lethal shot of insulin after gaining the access. According to Radcliffe, all wireless devices are susceptible to eavesdropping and that includes medical devices like pacemakers, defibrillators and insulin pumps.
The chances for these kinds of attacks are small and the potential consequences are also short. But think about this scenario: A criminal mastermind uses this technology to target a diabetic, who may be a high positioned official or a political leader, who always will be well guarded.
#1 Power Pwn
This is comparatively, a new way of threat which includes chameleon devices that are able to masquerades as typical gear. The victims fail to spot the device as it doesn’t look odd. But it will be embedded with some crafty tech which can bypass your security walls and maintain a connection with the attacker.
An example for such a device is the Power Pwn which is developed by Pwnie Express with a funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of U.S. Department of Defense. It looks like a usual office surge protector but carries High-gain, extended-range Wi-Fi, 1000-foot-range Bluetooth, and 3G.
Even though Pwnie Express says the product is intended s a network test tool, anybody with $ 1300 can buy the device.
