Microsoft’s early experiments with hardware were utter failures. First it experimented with Zune, a range of portable media players that compete with iPods. After its poor sales, in 2011, Microsoft announced discontinuation of all Zune hardware.
In 2010, Microsoft experimented with Kin- a family of Smartphones targeted at the social networking users. Microsoft spent around $1 billion focusing on these phones but just 3 months after launch, the company gave up on the device amid sluggish sales.
