Bangalore: As an outcome of the global financial turbulence, Infosys has placed around 5000 employees or five percent of its total workforce under the scanner, globally. About 40-50 sales executives have also been asked to quit in the last two months.

The Indian IT giant has told its senior managers (project managers, senior and group project managers, delivery managers) to give the lowest performance rating (4 on a scale of 1-4) to the 'underperforming' five percent as a part of the company's consolidated relative ranking (CRR). The company has made such ranking mandatory for the first time, and the ranks will be given on the basis of the employee's appraisals which is done twice a year. "The recommendations have already been submitted this month," a senior project manager working with Infosys told Business Standard on the condition of anonymity.

Commenting on the issue, Infosys Vice-President and Group HR Head Nandita Gurjar said there was no change in the policy, and the percentage of employees who are ranked four in the scale varies every year between one percent and five percent. The company has decided to implement a six-month mentoring program for such employees after which it will decide their future based on the improvements they have made. As a part of this program, each affected employee will be asked to work under the supervision of a mentor who is a senior executive. "While 50 percent of such employees come back to the system, others get the message and quit voluntarily in most cases," Gurjar said.

1: I was an Infosys employee till few days back. All this thing about employees being given 6 months to prove themselves, under a mentor is just crap.Its just an eyewash. I was called by the DC Head & my IBU head & they told me,that we are letting you go.Either you can quit or we have to terminate your services. In case you quit the termination letter doesnt say you got fired.So everyone quits & the company can say we did'nt fire anyone. No such thing as providing a mentor. Its just for the newspaper articles. So guys don't be under an impression that Infosys is not laying off. Even today I heard from my friend 5 of his team mates "RESIGNED". Got the hint....

5: I am an Infosys employee. It would not hurt me telling you that a person need not be any expert or much wise to comment on NRN.
At present NRN is just like Aurangzeb, unaware of the actualities of the system his creation is breeding on. Poor resource management is a trademark of the situation and the scenario now is that technical experts are being put to BPO jobs, the so called IMS.
The client is fooled and the freshers too, wherein both are paying for the thick salaries of the creamy layer.
The level of policies has now dropped to such a level that employees are being fined simply for forwarding mails in the Infosys network. How much after all NRN will gain like this? He won't even be able to digest this money.

7: I completely agree with rakesh.If the infosys fires one employee as an underperformer it will become a very diffcult thing for him/her to get a job in future.rather than firing employees they can decrease the pay scale.and also its better to continue the training for 1 year and giving the salary same as in actual training period.

13: Its easy to talk about the present taking the data from the past. Are we sure that the present economic state is what we call has reached the plateau. Remember, no one knows what is in store? Economy is at an all time low? Why?One word answer. us? Economy will be even worse in future? Why? One word answer.us. We are paying for the luxury of the developed nation. We got sick, sucked up jobs. We worked. We never thought of doing great for this country. No innovation.No quality research? Who to blame? One word answer. us. Government is self centered. No policy result disseminated fast. You know who is responsible. People want to to show their infy badge in the streets of Bangalore, doing screwed up job. I have also worked in Infosys. Super under utilization of resources. People are not free, cant think free, barriers of losing job for not doing data entry operation work. MBA's in Infy are useless. 90% doing data entry in Excel and word. We will be at the mercy of US and rich nations. Reason. We are used to it. Change will require massive jolt. As in Black Swan. Recession is good. See people have started thinking. That is a first step.

17: The so called recession to the economy is predicted by some of the great philosophers and common people. With the growth of IT and their high pay scales, the common people in the country suffer a lot. The land value, material value and all pumping up and there is no land even for agriculture. We are invetigating/researching to find out high yield variety of food grains with the help of IT, but forget to keep the land aside to sow it. The new generation is going behind the iluminate life style at an early age, just after their completion of graduation, and they are looking for high salaries and interested in jumping from companies to company in search of high perks. IT now come to its saturation point, and there is no way to give it a boost in the near future. The only way is to develop to give more importance to agriculture that IT. These are only my point of view. The readers can accept it or reject it....pls..

Hi Rajesh I do agree ur thoughts. Now all the young generation in India were forgot the agriculture, innovation,research and everything related to develop the country. They only want a job with high salary and to enjoy the week ends. This will surely spoil our country's future! The higher education also very poor. These are the challenges we have to overcome.

21: The discretion of lay-off if let loose is bound to create havoc to the workers and their family. Under the current economic condition or so called recession is it the only option left with the so called Big Organization? What about those employ who have been attached with the organization since its inception? What about those who have put in their prime time and age in these organizations? Is it justice with these employees? Why can’t company cut Perks, Salary, allowances and other expenses of middle and senior managers/ executives, directors and CEOs?

23: I guess this policy was in big companies like IBM and Patni etc. may be earlier they were not getting ppl to work so they kept those underperformers. Now they hv less project and enough ppl to work on it. Pay-cut is easy in word of mouth but not in real. all employees will be upset incl the gud ones.
One way this is good for good performers as long as managers are not misusing this policy.

Employees were demanding so huge salaries when the market was good and also they quit good companies just for a lame reason salary loosing some good benefits. When we do this tactics have we ever thought about payrise which the company offers.? but instead we jumped companies within 6-12 mons time.

Same weapon is used on us now. ( Quit company movement)

I don't work for infy or any big company in India. but this is a fact till 2007. IT was reaching saturation point in early 2008 now it broke. Its better to sack those 5K than closing the company. I knew 1 comp who gave payrise to employees based on locality which upset the good performers and finally closed its business in 4 years.

We can see more such policies to regulate the IT fields. This is when companies can make decisions. End of the day its business not charity.

I assume there must be at-least 10K under performers in infy. Finding out those under manager's blanket will be a tougher probs.

I am also an IT employee ( not a manager / TL or bigger ) just think outside.

Think of ppl in other field what will they do if they loose job for bad economy they wont even have savings like us. Private companies can fire employees easily.

We lived a western style life using IT field where firing is common. This is part of the package.

27: This is a complete bull and just a face-saving way of doing layoffs. No so called great company wants to openly admin that they are laying-off people at the same time frustrating the target number of employees so much that they leave on their own. And as rightly said in some of the other comments its generally managers pets who get the good ratings and not necessarily the technically good guys.

35: This ranking system clearly inroduces the "community politics" in the company. I have seen companies losing great talents because their seniors grade them depending on their likes rather than technical performance. This is real tragedy of our Indian companies.

37: At the end of the day the companies are interested in their own growth and not necessarily of their employees. They come up with interesting terminologies and rankings to justify the job cuts.

If only, they can think about the sincerity and dedication of their employees, they would at least think about pay cuts rather than job cuts. Also if they can sacrifice their salaries for their employees' survival, that would show their commitment to their employee welfare.

I hope, 6 to 12 months down the line, people do not forget whatever is happening now. These are difficult times for everybody including NRN. It does not take away the efforts and hard work they have put in to come to this level.

39: One would wonder how the company can grow 30% during the downtime.The company is seriously manipulating some thing or involved in real estate business.It could be even underpaid employees or benefits.
Secondly, when they do so much of profit why do they want to check out 5000 employees who believed them strongly..It will be hard to get jobs at this time especially when they announce thru media as underperformers.

But the main concern is "employee who is under performing has to lay-off and person who is performing has to retain their position."

i being an infosian...can very well verify that the so called mentor program is a total sham...all CRR 4s this year i knew were called and asked to either resign there and then or take their firing letter...simple..
no discussions,nothing.....
i wont comment on whats right or whats wrong...but the so called 6 month or 3 month program is only on papers...just to cool off people and seems to be a method to protect infosys reputation...it was in place earlier but now its not being implemented at all...
Politics...yes infosys has also fallen for it...the situation is only becoming bad if not worse
