Today every one of us is connected in some or the other social networking site, but without knowing the risks factors involved in it. No doubt it is also a pool of opportunities too, but one needs to be smart enough to handle the malicious intent of the person sitting at the other end. These social networking sites are created to allow people to share and meet online and hence insufficient knowledge and awareness of its vulnerability may get you or your friends in danger unknown to you.
1. Leakage of personal information
Over half a billion people on various social networks have made available a massive amount of personal information on them. It is possible for third parties to obtain these private data, via applications installed on the social network sites such as games and social interaction tools. For instance, "Facebook alone has over 55,000 external applications and 57 percent of social networking users report being hit by spam. Data theft has become a common phenomenon in these sites now and occurs when a fraudster steals identifying information like names, addresses, and financial data--from an unsuspecting victim and sells the information or uses it for personal gain.
