5 Most Deadliest Countries for Journalists in 2012
Brazil
Brazil is the fifth country pinned as death zone for journalists in 2012. With 5 journalists killed in Brazil this year, it has become another country dicey to be covered by journalist, who got to watch whether they get in a tiff or rather get killed in the process. The report said, “Drug traffickers operating across the Paraguayan border seem to have had a direct hand in the deaths of two of the five journalists murdered in connection with their work in Brazil in 2012. Both had covered drug cases. Two of the other victims were blogging journalists, who often find that the least criticism of local officials can expose them to danger.” journalists are getting killed for their job, as they are investigating on crime and preparing reports on police and government corruption. They are silenced as and when their work imposes threat to the authorities.
As report said, “Despite the UN Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 1738 in 2006, stressing the need to protect journalists in dangerous areas, violence against journalists, above all the killing of journalists, continues to be one of the biggest threats to freedom of expression” This has impaired the right of expression of people, costing life to those who continue to practice this freedom. With barely any investigation of the crime and killing of journalists the culprits feel that they can’t be identified or punished.
