4 Indian Cities Highly Susceptible to Disasters
4. Surat:
Surat, Gujarat's second largest city, and the eighth most populated city in India, is one of the cities most vulnerable and prone to a massive natural disaster like the flood, which the city is experiencing annually since the year 1849. Flood in Surat is considered as a common characteristic of this city as it strikes almost every year. Once monsoon starts its journey here, the entire city often transforms into a nightmare as the water level of the Ukai reservoir begins to rise with continuous rainfalls. In order to control this, the authorities of the place used to release water in large quantities which often leads to flood in Surat. The flood of 2006 in Surat took away the lives of more than 200 casualties and the whole infrastructure of the city like the schools, colleges, hospitals, offices and other important institutions and organizations came to a standstill as it became impossible to wade through the streets.
