3Com sets up India R&D facility

HYDERABAD: 3Com corporation has set up its R&D centre in India in a strategic partnership with start-up firm Mars Telecom. The new centre will complement 3Com’s R&D facilities in the US, UK and Taiwan. The centre will be involved in the areas of VoIP products and will support future growth into wireless, switching and network management. As per the arrangement, Mars Telecom will provide infrastructure support in the form of a dedicated R&D centre for 3Com. Mars Telecom, an STPI registered firm, will also look after the operational and HR support functions while 3Com will be involved in project execution and technology. Both 3Com and Mars Telecom top brass declined to divulge the revenue-sharing arrangement and the investments made on the R&D facility. The India R&D centre of 3Com is spread over 15,000 square feet of space and has 35 engineers as of now. The plans are to take the headcount to 80 in 12-15 months. The arrangement between 3Com and Mars Telecom is being called a “long-term commitment” and is expected to last for two years. 3Com adopted the partnership route essentially to enable a quick entry into the Indian market. Addressing a press conference, 3Com’s India Development Centre director Mohan Sayani said, “the team of 35 engineers are working on VoIP technology with our global R&D team in Chicago and Marlborough, US”. 3Com’s India focus will be in the verticals of services, government infrastructure and BFSI. Mars Telecom, which has facilitated 3Com’s entry into India, offers services in the areas of IT deployments, infrastructure management, human resources and enterprise-wide management systems. Mars Telecom managing director Ramesh Sundaresan said, the arrangement between the two companies was unique. The centre is totally dedicated and built to suit 3Com’s requirements, he added.
