35 Pct Women Fall Prey to Partner's Sexual Assault: WHO

Around 30 percent, that is one third of the women who were in a relationship have undergone physical and sexual violence by their own partner.

Intimate partner violence and women abuse occurred to 38 percent women in Southeast Asia including Bangladesh, East Timor, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand, the Eastern Mediterranean including Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan and Palestine and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Not only are the women victims of violence and sexual assault but as many as 38 percent lost their lives at the hands of someone with whom they were in a relationship.

Globally, 7 percent of women are victims of sexual violence by someone whom she is not in a relationship with. Such victims often opt for more alcohol usage and ultimately land into depression.

The study by WHO delivers a very strong message that sexual assault and abuse against women is not just a mere problem that has inflicted only some parts of the society but it is a matter of mass public health which requires urgent action.
