3 Reasons Why India Is Facebook's New Testing Lab

#1 Marketing in India

Online marketing is not yet a big thing with brands in India. The Indian brands only spend about 5 percent of marketing budget on campaigns. Ravi Rao, South Asia leader of ad agency Mindshare, expects roughly $290 million digital-ad industry to enjoy 30% growth annually India, but said brands are still learning what campaigns work best. He added that voice ads reach users with low-tech phones than online ads.

Kirthiga Reddy said--Pepsi, Maruti Suzuki and Shoppers Stop, in addition to small businesses like online souvenir-seller Chumbak, are advertising via Facebook. "Over the last two years, I've seen a marked change," she said. "Of course there are people who need more of a business case than others."

Facebook is gearing up to provide more region specific content in the country. The company holds marathon programming sessions—known as “hacks”. Recently the company hosted “hack” at a convention center in Bangalore, where a few hundred Indian programmers were assembled for seven hours to come up with useful, original apps.

Vivek Juneja, a 28-year-old tech consultant, developed an app to help users raise money from friends during a crisis.  He said "In the next two-three-four years, you'll see people experimenting with these ideas." He added that more of Indian software entrepreneurs are getting comfortable in exploring new avenues in consumer products like apps.

"I would love to see the next billion-dollar software company from India be built on the Facebook platform," Ms. Reddy said. "The ecosystem is just building."
