3 Million Girls in India Gone Missing In a Decade

As per the report "Every year, an estimated 26 millions of children are born in India which is nearly four million more than the population of Australia. It is significant that while an absolute increase of 181 million in the country's population has been recorded during the decade 2001-2011, there is a reduction of 5.05 millions in the population of children aged 0-6 years during this period. The decline in male children is 2.06 million and in female children is 2.99 millions. The share of Children (0-6 years) in the total population has showed a decline of 2.8 points in 2011, compared to Census 2001," as reported by TOI.

On the other hand, the education of girl child among lower income groups is also bleak. Except for Delhi (51.1 percent) and Bangalore (30.9 percent), education is not a priority for such households says a Child Relief and You (CRY) survey on 'prevalence of barriers to girl child education'. Further, the safety concerns were equally alarming, as per the all India figures, 20.4 percent said girls were abused in school while 23.7 percent said they were abused on the way to school.

It’s time the country works towards the development of girl child and stops the discrimination and abuse that many girls suffer from and encourage their right to equal education and their fundamental freedoms.
