260 Million Literates In India Cannot Read: Survey

The quality of education in private educational institutes especially in Hindi speaking States are believed to be uneven and uncertain as per the information of the People’s Report on Basic Education carried out by Professor Brij Kothari of IIM-Ahmedabad. Parents and concerned localities are recommended to be active as a watchdog for checking on the teachers and the way they teach in classrooms and also to see that mid day meals are properly and regularly given.

Peace, environment, justice and secular human values in education are some of the most ignored and left out topics in schools, as pointed out by the report. Suitable teaching methods and assistance should be employed to improve the self esteem and confidence of the children and provide a safer and tension free environment. Scheduled caste, tribes, the disabled and other impoverished children, mainly in rural and urban areas should be given special attention when it comes to education.
