The company said on it choosing the mascot, “We soon realized that there was one decision here, and that's the elephant. An elephant never forgets, and that's what Evernote is all about. Don't mess with the elephant.”

For Reddit's numerous fans, the alien mascot is instantly recognizable. The design is simple -- black-and-white shapes with red eyes -- but click around the website to see dozens of different takes on the creature from some graphic designers who have done a lot of good work.

The social-networking software maker held a contest for people to submit logo-design sketches, which garnered 450 submissions. People voted on the favorite, which was a raccoon. The company liked the idea, but not that particular raccoon. Later, it found an image of a cartoon raccoon when and purchased the rights.
