#6 Chevron: Brutal Homicide

In 1956 the available petroleum oil was discovered. Ever since, the areas and its people were extremely exploited from the oil companies. In the Niger Delta, Nigeria, companies such as Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron had been making profit utilizing the maximum from this poor area. The governments were also with the companies. In the 70s, the Nigerian government forced the natives to abandon their land to oil companies, which offered negligible compensation.

The natives fought back and it turned violent in the early 90s. This led to the government to declare that disturbing oil production was an act of treason.

The companies had their own military assistance. And Chevron had a military base at their Escravos facility, in the Delta State of Nigeria, which had over a hundred soldiers. In 1999, when leaders of the movement came to negotiate with the soldiers, they were shot at and up to 62 people were killed by the soldiers, including children. The soldiers continued by setting the villages on fire, killing livestock and destroying fishing equipment.
