10 Most Expensive Wines: A Connoisseur's Fantasy

#7 Chateau d'Yquem 1787

Price - $100,000

Château d'Yquem is a Premier Cru Supérieur (which means "Superior First Growth") wine from the Sauternes, Gironde region in the southern part of the Bordeaux vineyards known as Graves. 1787 Château d'Yquem has become somewhat legendary in the world of white wine – both for its unique taste and status and the price it has fetched at auction. Many collections are available to celebrate three centuries of production and with the site now no longer owned by the Lur Saluces family some of the older vintages are increasingly difficult to source.

Particularly in demand are items and effects belonging to the Lur Saluces family and also wines that are available in their original wooden cases – or OWCs. Another significant factor with the vintages are the colour – as the wine ages it becomes less golden and more amber. Yquem's success stems largely from the site's susceptibility to attack by "noble rot" (Botrytis cinerea) – which is a type of necrotrophic fungus which affects grapes. Noble rot, occurs when drier conditions follow wetter, and can result in distinctive sweet dessert wines, such as Sauternes.
