9. eBay buys PayPal

Value: $1.5 billion

E-commerce major, eBay brought online payments firm PayPal and gained control of the popular electronic payment service favored by many of its users. eBay CEO Meg Whitman and his Paypal counterpart Peter Thiel were at the centre of focus in this event.

Sharing her opinion about the deal, Merrill Lynch, analyst at Justin Baldauf said, "PayPal is the 'gorilla' in the online payment market, as eBay is the 'gorilla' in the online auction market."

8. Google buys YouTube
Deal happened in: October 2006
Value: $1.65 billion

At the behest of Google founder Larry Page, the web search engine major brought online video platform YouTube from its founders, Steve Chen and Chad Hurley. The all-stock deal announced merges one of the Internet’s marquee companies, Google with one of its rapidly rising stars, YouTube.
