10 Hyped Technologies That Miserably Failed

#7 DIVX

Year it was supposed to blow: 1998

It is not DiVX codec, so no confusion. DIVX was a rental disk containing videos and music marketed by Circuit City. If you rented the disk, you got to use it with a DVIX player which was connected to a phone line. The time limit for rented disk was 48 hours, and use of disk for any extra hours was done by paying more via your DIVX account. No wonder it only lingered for a small time.

#6 Augmented Reality

Year it was supposed to blow: 1997

Augmented reality (AR) was a tool to augment real world environment elements by computer generated sensory inputs—image, video, sound, or GPS data.

It has found more acceptances in professional settings, mostly in sports, like the first down line in football. But AR is not that popular with consumers, for it wouldn’t be that fun to augment on daily realities which could fun in the way they are. Some games with AR are fun, but there’s nothing mind blowing came yet.
