Ultimate TV was DirectTV receiver, integrated with DVR (digital video recorder) and Internet access features. It had built in satellite tuner with a digital video recorder and internet access in a set-top box, released on October 26, 2000.

Microsoft hoped to be a pioneer in DVR market along with Tivo and ReplayTV.  They wanted to popularize the use of device to capture television programming to internal hard disk storage for later viewing.  But the company failed to score with major cable providers. The distribution was limited to DirectTV, a pact which expired when EchoStar, with its own DVR technology, sought to acquire Microsoft’s partner in 2002.  

#1 Zune

Zune was the brand of digital media products and services developed by Microsoft. It included portable media players and media player software for Windows devices. Zune however failed to mark its presence in consumer market, the Zune MP3 player was extinct before people even got to know about it. It also failed to compete with iPod, which had higher hand when it came to music.
