#8 Girls Who Code

Who they are: Girls Who Code is an organization working to educate, inspire and equip 13- to 17-year-old girls with the skills and resources to pursue opportunities in technology and engineering.

Why they're inspiring: Girls Who Code was founded by Reshma Saujani, a local New York City politician who saw the gender income gap and the inequalities girls faced in the tech industry. Girls involved in the program "learn how to build websites and mobile apps and start their own companies. There will also be workshops on topics such as financial literacy, computer science and robotics," according to the Wall Street Journal.

Together with leading educators, engineers, and entrepreneurs, Girls Who Code has developed a new model for computer science education, pairing intensive instruction in robotics, web design, and mobile development with high-touch mentorship led by the industry's top female developers and entrepreneurs.

 

#7 Harnu

Who they are: A website that encourages people around the world to discuss global issues and foreign news in their own languages.

Why they're inspiring: Härnu, in Swedish means "here" and "now," makes world communicate, going beyond boundaries. It inspires people around the world to have direct conversations, form friendships, and talk about issues and news in their areas.

Harnu is playing a novel role in inspiring people to get involved with the global news. Its co-founder Jason Gowans says that they came up with the idea when they became troubled by the increasing lack of interest in foreign news, especially in Americans. Now Harnu has users from more than 100 countries and these users post articles of local news taken from news papers and engaging in thoughtful conversations and live group chats.
