10 Most Expensive Auction-Sold Classic Cars

#9 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster

The 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Spezial Roadster was sold for $9.68 million at the RM Auctions in Monterey, California in the last year.

The car has 5,401 cc supercharged overhead valve inline 8-cylinder engine, twin updraft pressurized carburetor, four-speed transmission, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. The powerful car was light-weight as well. Benz built only 419 pieces of the model of which only 25 carried the superlative longtail Spezial Roadster coachwork.

Being more powerful than its predecessor, the 540 K was capable of high speed touring along with comfortable interiors.

The pinnacle of classic cars, 540 K Spezial Roadster accommodates only two passengers, and it looks much smaller and lighter than it really is. The sloping radiator of the car is tucked back at the front wheels’ centerline behind front fenders, which curves up to create the rear fenders. Two massive exhaust pipes emerge from the hood’s right. Putting aside its intended purpose, the 540 K Spezial Roadster is the finest in Mercedes engineering and coachwork.
