Chennai: Japan headquartered, Toshiba, a manufacturer and marketer of electronic and electrical products, will come up with a $250 million (1000 crore) power boiler plant at Ennore, in the north of Chennai. It has plans of a gradual setting of 15,000 MW capacitated boilers. The company is in talks with the State Government’s Transport Department and the National Highways Authority for the strengthening of the roadways ensuring safe transport of the heavy equipments to the Ennore port for the project. A surge in the investment in the power equipment sector has been seen due to a shortage of proper manufacturing capacity. The Tiruchi, Tamil Nadu based Cethar vessels, which has a 7000 MW boiler capacity, plans to invest around 3000 crore more to manufacture turbines, while L&T joins Mitsubishi Electric for producing boilers and turbines in India. It is talking with some Chinese firms including Harbin for technology, as reported by Businessline. Even NTPC-BHEL Power Projects, an equal joint venture, said it plans to invest 6000 crore ($1.5 billion) in greenfield projects to set up a power equipment plant that would manufacture boilers and turbines.
