BHUBANESHWAR: Armed with a Web site on e-governance and computer kiosks in its villages, Orissa is trying to take IT to its rural areas. Information on agriculture, rural governance, health and developmental schemes will be provided at these kiosks and through the Web site, www.aamagaon.com. "Orissa plans to build knowledge communities through information networks. Villagers can access information by logging on to the site," a state IT department official told IANS. A villager, he said, can even file his petition to the district collector through the 'abhiyog sunani', or the grievance cell of the Web site. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with the Panchayati Raj department, has started an IT initiative in cyclone-affected districts. "We plan to set up IT kiosks in every village. We are encouraging both government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to initiate and run the project," he said. "At least 80 IT kiosks in 11 out of 30 districts have already been set up. Village councils, NGOs and individuals run these kiosks." A firm called CSM Technologies has provided the technological support to build Web interface in these kiosks with UNDP aid, he said.
