New Delhi: The National-Do-Not-Call (NDNC) registry which had dimmed into obscurity has come to the limelight with the telecom regulator TRAI unwiring 10151 telephones of the telemarketers due to violation of regulations. Expressing the positive impact of the actions TRAI said, "In the one year of its operations, there has been a significant reduction in the number of telemarketing calls to registered subscribers of NDNC Registry."
The repeated infringement of the NDNC, whereby telemarketers are prohibited to call any registered number under the registry, has brought in around 2801 telemarketers under the legal book with a fine of
1000 and another 8543 telemarketers with a fine of
500. However, around 8602 disconnections were made as they were not registered with the Department of Telecommunications (DOT).
Checking the complaints with a zero tolerance attitude TRAI has succeeded in resolving 79, 000 complaints out of 81, 000 though 1600 complaints are still pending. Moreover, around 19, 163 telemarketers have currently registered with DOT.
