Myanmar-India ties up for IT development

Yangon: India being amongst the most revered IT hub, has offered its hand in developing Myanmar's IT skills, through the establishment of 11 IT centers. As per the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the countries, the plan would cover, major cities of Yangon and Mandalay and others with the co-operation of Center for Development Advanced Computing (CDAC) of India and the state-run Myanmar Posts and Telecommunications (MPT). As a step for the implementation of the project, around 100 government servants are sent to India for acquiring the required knowledge of the IT sector. These talks of IT development have been there since the president ship of APJ Abdul Kalam. As an initiative for building up proper communication channels, a contract between the MPT and the Telecommunications Consultants India (TCIL) was endorsed whereby, the two sides were to implement SDH/STM 4 optical fiber link between Moreh, northeastern border town of India, and Mandalay, the second biggest city in central Myanmar, and the ADSL systems. There was also an agreement on using India's satellite to directly receive data for agricultural forecasting with India providing a grant aid of $1.3 million to upgrade remote sensing ground receiving station in Yangon and another $3 million with delineation of Myanmar's continental shelf in addition to technical assistance for the project. According to an analysis of the current IT status and utilization of information technology in Myanmar, areas like IT application, IT in education, foundation for IT industry, IT infrastructure and IT legal framework, are prioritized for development by 2010.
