NEW DELHI: The younger brother of India's most wanted person and one of the accused in the 1993 terror bombings in Mumbai has been arrested in Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani announced Monday. Anees Ibrahim was detained at Dubai airport last week while returning from Pakistan, Advani told a television channel in Ahmedabad. He was reportedly holding a Pakistani passport. Anees Ibrahim is considered a confidante of Dawood Ibrahim, the alleged mastermind behind the Mumbai bombings that killed some 250 people and who Indian officials say lives in Pakistan. Both Ibrahims are wanted by Indian authorities for their role in the Mumbai bombings that followed the riots in the country's financial capital in the wake of the Babri mosque demolition in Ayodhya. Advani said the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) had gone to Dubai to seek Anees Ibrahim's deportation. Advani did not say on which day was Anees Ibrahim arrested. Both the Ibrahim brothers fled India after the serial blasts of March 12, 1993. Advani said: "The CBI team and the Indian embassy in UAE (United Arab Emirates) are working in tandem to bring Anees back to India. A red corner notice has been issued against him by the Interpol." Advani said he hoped the UAE authorities would hand over Anees Ibrahim to Indian authorities, as they did in the case of Aftab Ansari, another suspected underworld member who was accused of an attack on the American Centre in Kolkata in January. Ansari and two others were deported to India from Dubai in February. But experts here admit the deportation of Anees Ibrahim would not be easy as he holds a Pakistani passport and Indian authorities would have to prove that he was an Indian when he committed the crimes he is charged with. A team of forensic experts will be sent with the fingerprints of Anees Ibrahim to coordinate with the Dubai authorities, officials said. India is still trying to net alleged gangster Abu Salem, who was arrested in Portugal in September. Salem is another associate of Dawood Ibrahim and was also linked to the Mumbai bomb blasts.
