MapmyIndia launches in-car GPS navigation device

Bangalore: A New Delhi based navigable map data provider MapmyIndia has launched an in-car GPS navigation device called MapmyIndia Navigator. Roshan Verma, Marketing Head, CE Infosystems, promoters of MapmyIndia, said that the portable satellite-connected GPS gadget is pre-loaded with comprehensive maps of the entire Indian sub-continent and provides real time, voice guided, turn by turn navigation for seamless travel across the country. Currently the system offers maps of 55,000 towns and villages, 150 cities and 18 major cities. The system will be upgraded every six months, covering wider areas. The company is partnering with leading players in the eco-system, automobile companies, handset and PND manufacturers, software providers, mobile operators, internet portals and retail and distribution networks of cars, car accessories and consumer electronic products. "Internationally the market for in-car GPS navigation has seen an exponential growth especially in the US and Europe. In India an estimated 100,000 such devices is expected to be sold in the next one year," he said. According to Verma, the portable pocket sized device, powered by Horizon Navigation software, is currently available in two hardware models, Delphi NAV 200 and AMAX 06GP5A. Both the personal navigation devices have built-in GPS (SirfStar III), 3.5" colour touch-screen, Samsung 400 MHz processor and additional multimedia features to play movies, music, photos, and games. The MapmyIndia Navigator is priced at Rs 21,000 in Delhi and Rs 22,000 in other states. Currently the navigation system is available on Airtel's Blackberry platform. Verma plans to offer the services directly to mobile cell phone users. "The monthly subscription rate for Mapmyindia on cell phones is 400, it's 1,100 if paid quarterly and 4,000 if paid annually," revealed Verma.
