MUMBAI: Maharashtra government will shortly announce a new policy for IT enabled services and telecom sector and introduce legislation on data protection to attract higher investments from software companies, chief minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said today. "The government is working on the policy which will be placed before the state cabinet shortly and hope to announce the same within two months", Shinde said. "We will take all possible steps to attract investments in IT sector" and have decided to form a working group on data protection, to be headed by Nasscom president Kiran Karnik, which would give recommendations for the security bill, he added. State industry secretary V Dhumal said the group on data protection was expected to submit its report in three months. "IT company's clients are sensitive about the security and confidentiality of data and need certain assurance that information will be protected", Dhumal said adding this could be provided through a new act. Shinde, later responding to queries from the delegates on quality of infrastructure, said the state was facing a power shortage to the tune of 2,000 mw and affected the industry including IT units. State has sought additional electricity supply from the centre, he said adding the government would henceforth make investment in increasing power generation. The sugar mills would be encouraged to generate power (1,500 mw) to tide over the problems, he added.
