Kalam for IT tie-up with UAE

ABU DHABI: Indian President A P J Abdul Kalam has talked technology during his visit to the United Arab Emirates. He called upon technocrats to mould the world into a knowledge-based society. Kalam met Crown Prince of UAE Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and discussed the entire gamut of bilateral and international relations. They mulled ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries in science and technology with special emphasis on use of solar energy, which both nations have in abundance. As part of the efforts to boost collaboration in the field of Information Technology, the two leaders felt that a three to four member group be set up for contract research for high tech projects in the field of knowledge technology. Key projects Kalam also drove home the point that India should bid for major fertiliser and other gas-based projects in the UAE to counter China's growing economic presence in the region. The President, in his meeting with the heads of Indian missions in the Gulf countries, emphasised on the need to go for big projects like Oman fertiliser factory based on urea and gas. Kalam arrived in Abu Dhabi on Saturday on his first official tour to three nations. The seven-day trip will also take the Indian President to Sudan and Bulagari.
