IT exports from Hyderabad may cross $1 B mark

HYDERABAD: IT exports from Hyderabad is expected to cross $1 billion mark during 2003-04 despite continuing cuts on IT spending as well as declining research and development (R and D) spending. The Software Technology Park of India (STPI) here, which registered a growth of 26 percent during 2002-03, has projected 40 to 50 percent growth mainly in the hope that IT Enabled Services (ITES) would keep growing in the coming months. The target for the ITES segment alone has been fixed at Rs 25 billion out of the total target of 47 to 50 billion for the current financial year. STPI is optimistic about achieving the projected growth despite falling short of target in 2002-03. IT exports have risen to Rs 36.68 billion during fiscal 2002-03. Announcing the figures Monday evening, STPI Hyderabad director M. Vijay Kumar said IT exports had grown by 26 percent as against 42 percent growth in the previous year. IT exports in 2001-02 were Rs 29.07 billion. Though the target for 2002-03 was fixed at Rs 40 billion, there was a shortfall of Rs 3.32 billion owing to global economic slump and other factors. The ITES sector, which contributed 39.16 percent of the total exports, recorded an impressive growth of 104 percent. The sector has grown to Rs 14.11 billion, from Rs 6.9 billion in 2001-02 (24.11 percent of the total exports). Randeep Sudan, special secretary to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, said STPI Hyderabad had progressed to fourth place among STPIs, from eighth in 2001. Bangalore heads the list with 123.50 billion exports followed by Noida ( 74.50 billion) and Chennai ( 63.15 billion). He said ITES, including call centres and Business Process Outsourcing, would continue to get special attention of the state government. Further expansion of ITES sector was on cards with the additional infrastructure being created by Ascendas at HITEC City and by Raheja Group in Hyderabad Set up in 1991-92, STPI has always maintained a higher than national average growth rate. It recorded more than 100 percent growth rate for eight years, achieved 85 percent growth at 9.77 billion in 2000 followed by 81 percent in 2001 and 42 percent in 2002. Of the total exports, Satyam Computer Services topped the list with 4.62 billion, followed by Wipro at 4.48 billion, GE Capital International Services at 3.41 billion and Infosys Technologies at 2.32 billion. As in the previous years, bulk of the exports were made to the U.S. and Canada (59 percent). Europe accounted for 18.72 percent of the exports while the other regions and countries such as Britain, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Asia and the Middle East accounted for the remaining exports. A total of 81 new units were registered with STPI Hyderabad during the year. Of the total of 1,401 units, 820 were operating units and 352 units were under gestation at the end of March 2003. The remaining units were non-operating ones. Exports through datacom facilities increased to 79.26 percent of the total IT exports. Onsite consultancy projects accounted for 20.52 percent of the total IT exports during 2002-03. A total of 71,445 people were working in software and ITES sector at the end of 2002-03. The capital investment in new software export houses increased by Rs 5.12 billion during the year. IT companies in Hyderabad covered a wide range of areas such as ERP, system software, application software, web applications, Internet applications, CRM, CAD/CAM/GIS, data warehousing, expert systems and embedded software.
