Instructions to railway drivers and guards now via mobile SMS

New Delhi: Now onwards, all the drivers and guards in Indian Railway will receive instructions via SMS. The move is part of efforts to utilize technology to increase railway's efficiency.
"All loco drivers and guards will be communicated through SMS about their duties as part of the Crew Management System," said a senior railway official.
"Crew booking is being computerized now as part of the new system. Drivers, assistant drivers and guards of all passengers and goods trains will be covered in the system," an official said.
"We have finalized the SMS modules which will be applicable to all categories of drivers," said the official.
The initiative will cover all major stations where a minimum of 36 drivers report for duty "The process of computerization involving crew members is already on and railways hope to cover all drivers and guards in the system by October 2008," added the official.
Besides this initiative, the railways is planning to provide hand held terminals to Train Ticket Examiners on all important trains including Rajdhani and Shatabdi.
