MUMBAI: Hours after three of a family in Pune were declared patients of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), health authorities found a case of the potentially fatal pneumonia in another Maharashtra town.
Girish Gajwani, 23, was diagnosed with SARS after being admitted to hospital in Nashik, 85 km from here, Monday evening.
Health officials here said Tuesday that Gajwani had tested positive for SARS and has been confined to an isolation ward.
Gajwani had returned home on April 18 from the United States. Doctors ordered him to be admitted to hospital after he showed symptoms of SARS, officials said.
The revelation came a day after three members of a family tested positive for SARS in Pune, 185 km from here. Stanley D'Silva, who returned from Indonesia three weeks ago, had infected his mother Vimal and 26-year-old sister Julie.
Stanley had come home to attend Julie's wedding scheduled for Monday. The ceremony was conducted behind closed doors.
Reports from Pune said health officials tried to stop Julie, who was dressed in bridal finery, from going ahead with the ceremony at the Oldham Methodist Church after she tested positive for SARS, which has claimed 218 lives worldwide, mostly in Southeast Asia.
But the family decided to go ahead with the wedding. Shortly after 6.00 p.m., with just 10 to 15 close family members in attendance, the marriage was solemnised. Julie was then rushed to hospital.
In all 11 members of the family with whom the D'Silvas stayed in Pune have been kept under observation in the isolation ward of the hospital, officials here said.
All three D'Silvas are reported to be suffering from a mild form of SARS and are recovering. But there is worry because Stanley came in contact with a large number of people since his return.
India's first SARS case was detected in Goa last week. The marine engineer who had visited Singapore and Hong Kong had contracted a mild form of the disease and has been declared cured.
A New Zealander and a seven-year-old girl in New Delhi were suspected of being infected, but tests showed both were clear of SARS.
