Mumbai: As a part of its modernization plan which is supposed to be completed before the Commonwealth Game 2010 that India is hosting, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) is equipping its buses with a real time passenger information system by utilizing Global Positioning System (GPS), reported mint.
According to the system, passenger will be provided information about the arrival, departure times and other route information. Bus timings and routes will be displayed on light emitting diode, or LED, displays that will be enabled with automated voice over messages.
Apart from this facility, through a vehicle tracking and monitoring system the new technology will generate data and reports. This will help DTC take fleet management decisions and make the utility more efficient.
ORG informatics System, one of the major IT and Telecom companies, has won the contract to deploy the new information system. ORG will be responsible for the operation, maintenance and facility management of the information system for six years, during which it will bear the commercial cost of the project and earn revenues through advertising on DTC buses and the information displays. ORG will also create an Internet portal for DTC.
DTC believes that with the introduction of new system its revenue will increase, which was marked a loss of about
330 crore in the year to March. Main source of DTC revenue out of this system is advertisements, which they carry. After a pilot process DTC is looking to extent the system to all 3,500 buses.
