BT to set up virtual schools in collaboration with India

New Delhi: British telecom firm BT, in assocoiation with twenty two industry and academic partners from India and UK, will set up a virtual school that will support post-doctoral studies on various subjects.
"We will do innovation and training in a new way. We are going to join a number of universities and industries both in India and UK to create a kind of open platform," said Ben Verwaayen, Chief Executive, BT Group.
First of its kind, the initiative would not be just about telecom but about all sectors, explained Verwaayen. "This is a world where people in food, pharmaceutical and financial services industry are coming together and creating an environment of new ideas and concepts. The beauty of this is, it has not been done ever before," he said.
The objective behind this effort is to allow people to train and teach different aspects in a broader way, he added.
Some of the UK-based partners include University of Surrey, University of Cambridge and University of Birmingham, while India is represented by the likes of IIT Madras and Mumbai, Infosys Technologies, Wipro, Indian Institute of Science, BT India and Tejas Networks.
Five years ago if BT had to think of a country to have this kind of a tie-up it would have been US, but now we are enthusiastic about India, he said, highlighting the importance of India in BT's global strategy.
