Bangalore gets IBM's sixth global semiconductor unit

Bangalore: IBM continues with its expansion plans focusing on research and development in more depth. The company is looking to set up a semiconductor-related research center in Bangalore, which will cater to handling complex work. The new research center - Semiconductor Research and Development Enablement Center (SRDC) will be IBM’s sixth center globally and the first outside US and Europe. This is part of the systems and technology group of IBM which develops and manufactures advanced semiconductor and interconnect technologies. David L. Harame, director enablement, Systems & Technology group, IBM said that is setting up operations in Bangalore owing to the presence of skilled manpower and has already begun the recruitment process. IBM would be looking at leading universities for qualified people, who were planning to return to the country. To start with, the center will be engaged in compact modeling, expanding into other areas based on progress. Harame informed that SRDC is part of IBM labs India, which has around 1000 people spread across three centers in Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad. Considering multiple locations and areas of operations IBM has over 43, 000 people in its India activities. IBM announced in June 2006 an investment of $ 6 billion in India over the next three years and this new center is a part of it. IBM’s activities in India include global delivery of IT services, hardware, research, product related activity and BPO. An IBM official also mentioned that it is in the process of forming alliances with top universities to acquire the required talent.
