New Delhi: Mobile subscriber base in India has grown by 54 percent over the last year, with 100 million new users added to the mobile club during this period.
According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data, total mobile users in India has reached at 296.08 million mark in July-end this year against 192.98 million last year in the same month - there is a year-on-year growth of 53.44 percent.
The highest-ever addition of 9.22 million mobile subscribers was witnessed in July this year with a total tele-density of the country by 29.08 percent.
Moreover, more than eight million subscribers have been added consistently for more than six months now, and this trend may continue as 700 million more remain to be tapped.
Low tariff rate is believed to be one of the major factors to increase the mobile subscription. Calls are now getting in cheap rate, which makes mobile phone affordable to all classes.
Analysts are of the view that growth of India's mobile market remains robust as competition among mobile operators continues to intensify. With the mobile penetration level having just exceeded 25 percent, considerable growth potential still remains, particularly in the massive rural markets.
Mobile operators in the country have now started to expand their operation in to the rural markets. Their network-infrastructure-sharing initiatives will help speed up network roll-out in the rural and remote areas.
In addition, the anticipated 3G roll licensing will further boost up the competition level and will ensure industry growth.
In contrast, fixed line connection has fallen by 0.16 million in July 2008, as per the data released by the telecom regulator.
