India's Most Powerful Female Politicians


Jayalalithaa: Following the political tradition of Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Jayalalitha transformed from a popular film star to an avid politician. She also served as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in 1991 and 2001 butlose power in 1996 due to corruption charges. She is also the party head of AIADMK.

This is her third term in the office; she is a tough politician who is admired and feared for playing hard politics. She is a leader who has what it takes to survive in the male-dominated world of Tamil Nadu politics.

Renuka Chowdhury: Candid and eloquent, Renuka Chaudary is the member of Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh and entered politics in 1984. She was also the former Union minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in the Deve Gowda administration, in 1997. In 1998 she quit TDP and joined Congress. She got elected to Lok Sabha in 1999 and 2004. She has also been on the Committee of Finance and Committee on the Empowerment of Women. In 2004 under the UPA government, she became the Minister of State for Tourism and later in 2006, she became the Union Minister of state for Women and Child Development until 2009.
